It matters to me that the audio through the speakers sound good. I don't listen to music at all through my headphones, so I hadn't thought of doing so. The way I listen to music nowadays is:I convert the recording with DVDTOHP to a binaural recording and then I use VLC mediaplayer with all filters and converters OFF(under Preferences>Audio, choose ‘Output module= ALSA audio output’,’Device= *****Audio Direct hardware device without any conversions, The ***** is your actual audio card).Įvery extra sound processing in the sound route will create more noise and distortion, so it is wise not to place an equalizer by default in the sound route and avoid unnecessary sound processing. Use Audacity to find the right control values for youself. The value ‘control=1.0’ will become something like ‘control=1.5,1.0,0.75’ for a LADSPA filter with 3 controls. You can use your own favorite LADSPA equalizer/Filter in place of my version, but then you need to find the right control values. In this line ‘libstereotoheadhone’ is the name of the LADSPA filter which is loaded (in this example a LADSPA filter programmed by me, to do stereo audio to binaural conversion, findable by Google ‘kappert dvdtohp’ ).’stereotobinaural’ is the name of the actual ladspa function. This will create a new soundcard (ladspa_out)which can be chosen as the default soundcard or as the soundcard to be used by a sound program. First use terminal command:Ĭode: Select all pacmd load-module module-ladspa-sink sink_name=ladspa_out master=alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo plugin=libstereotoheadphone label=stereotobinaural control=1.0

It is possible to create a virtual soundcard automatically using a LADSPA filter. If you don’t want to use VLC media player you can place an LADSPA filter in front of the Pulsaudio route. Some brands try to solve this with an inbuild equalizer (I believe Beats Audio is one of them) It is almost impossible to get good sound with only an equalizer and with the build in equalizer (so you have 2 equlizers) you get rubbish. The real problem with headphone listening is that recordings are mixed for speaker listening. Is the right choice selected (Headphone has other impedance than speaker and this can sound different). In the ‘output’ tab sometimes you can select between speaker and headphone. With Linux Mint Mate you can get to audio preferences with right clicking the speaker in the status bar. I guess you want to listen with headphone. In this program you can activate an equalizer with menu option Tools>Effects and filters. You can use VLC media player, available in the Software Manager.

Is there anything I can download, or do in the terminal, that could help? Should I upgrade my Linux kernel to get more drivers?

I so badly want to switch the Linux Mint full-time, but I want the audio quality to be just as good as it is on Windows 10. The Linux kernel I'm using is the default one for Mint 18, which is 4.4.0-generic. I also installed alsa-tools-gui, for hdajackretask, but it didn't help that much, and I don't have the same pins as others who are using it for their HP laptops with Beats Audio(those posts are also a few years old anyway). I downloaded PulseAudio Equalizer, and set the preset to "Live" which helped a lot. Now, I can make the sound a little better than out of the box, but for some reason, it still doesn't sound as good, as loud and clear, as it does on Windows 10, and I even have Beats Audio turned off. My audio driver, according to Mint, is Realtek ALC3241, as I do have Realtek speakers. I have an HP Pavilion 15-p033ca Notebook(Canadian), and it comes with Beats Audio.

I love everything about it, and I absolutely love Linux! There's only one glaring problem preventing me from making the full-time switch to Linux Mint, and that's audio. I'm new to Linux, and I thought I'd try Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 as my distro of choice.
